Choir Mixer — Getting Started
v3.8.15 · Rhythm ‘n’ Roots
What Is This?
Choir Mixer is a practice tool that plays your choir’s recordings with separate tracks for each voice part — Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass, and so on. You’re in charge of the playback, just like a stereo system with individual volume controls for each part. Turn your own part up, turn others down, slow things down while you’re learning, or loop a tricky phrase until it feels comfortable.
Everything you adjust is saved automatically and will be right where you left it next time you open the page.
Choosing a Song
The song title at the top is a dropdown menu. Tap it to see all available songs and select one. The mixer will load the tracks for that song along with any settings you saved last time.
The Playback Controls
Think of these like the buttons on a CD player or music app.
- Play / Pause — starts or pauses the music. Tap again to resume.
- Stop — stops and rewinds. If you’re looping a section, it rewinds to the start of that section.
- Loop — repeats a section of the song over and over (see Loop below).
- Speed — slows the music down without changing the pitch. Drag left to slow down, all the way to 25% of normal speed. Great for learning fast passages.
- Pitch — shifts the key of the song up or down by up to three semitones, without affecting the tempo. Handy if a song sits a bit high or low for your voice.
- Export Mix — saves the current playback as an audio file you can use for offline practice.
You can also press the spacebar on your keyboard to play and pause.
The small status display shows what the mixer is doing — Ready, Playing, Paused, or Working… while it processes a speed or pitch change.
Moving Around the Song
The progress bar across the top shows how far through the song you are, with the time elapsed on the left and time remaining on the right. It works just like the progress bar in any music or video app:
- Tap anywhere on the bar to jump to that spot.
- Drag the circle (the playhead) to move through the song.
- If rehearsal markers are set, the playhead will snap to them as you drag — making it easy to land right at the start of a verse or chorus.
Rehearsal Markers
Small amber triangles (▾) on the progress bar mark named sections of the song — Verse, Chorus, Bridge, or section letters like A, B, C.
- Tap a marker to jump straight to that section.
- Double-tap a marker to automatically loop that entire section and start repeating it.
You can also use the Tab key on your keyboard to jump forward to the next marker, and Shift + Tab to go back to the previous one.
Looping a Section
Looping lets you repeat a passage over and over — perfect for drilling a tricky entry or learning the words to a verse.
Below the progress bar is a thin loop bar with two small triangle handles — one for the start of the loop and one for the end. The section between them is highlighted in blue when looping is on.
- Drag the start handle to set where the loop begins.
- Drag the end handle to set where it ends.
- Tap the Loop button to turn looping on or off, or press L on your keyboard.
When you stop during a loop, the playhead goes back to the loop start so you’re always ready to go again.
Tip: Double-tap any rehearsal marker to instantly set the loop to that whole section.
The Voice Part Controls
Each voice part has its own strip with four controls:
Volume Drag the Vol slider up or down to make that part louder or quieter. Turn your own part up and the others down to help you learn your line. Your settings are saved automatically.
Left / Right Balance (Pan) The Pan slider moves that voice from left to right in your headphones or speakers — left ear, centre, or right ear. The parts start spread out by default so they’re easier to tell apart in headphones. Adjust to taste.
Solo Press and hold Solo to hear only that part by itself. Release to bring everyone back. It’s a hold-to-hear button, not a toggle.
Mute Click Mute to silence a part completely. Click again to bring it back. The button turns red when a track is muted. Your volume setting is preserved — it comes back exactly as you left it when you unmute.
Slowing Down
Drag the Speed slider to the left to slow the music down. The pitch stays exactly the same — it won’t sound like a slowed-down tape, just a more relaxed tempo. The display shows the percentage: 75% means three-quarters of normal speed.
Once you’ve got a passage under your fingers, gradually bring the speed back up to 100%.
Saving a Practice Recording
The Export Mix button saves whatever you’re hearing as an audio file (WAV format) that you can play anywhere — on your phone, in your car, on any device without needing an internet connection.
The file reflects exactly what you’ve set up: if you’ve muted everything except your own part, only your part will be in the file. If you’ve slowed it to 75%, the file will be at 75%. The filename tells you what settings were used.
Exporting a Loop If you have a loop set and press Export Mix, you’ll be asked:
- Export Loop Section — saves just that passage as a short clip
- Export Full Song — saves the complete song at your current speed and pitch
- Cancel — goes back without saving
The Waveform (Optional)
There’s a small triangle labelled Waveform below the loop bar. Tap it to expand a picture of the audio. It shows the shape of the music — louder sections appear taller. The green line tracks your position as the music plays. You can tap or drag on the waveform to move through the song, the same as the progress bar. If you have a loop set, the loop section is shaded blue.
Sheet Music
If sheet music is available for the current song, an amber link will appear at the bottom of the page. Tap it to open the PDF in a new tab.
Your Settings Are Saved Automatically
The mixer remembers:
- Which song you were listening to
- Your volume and balance settings for each part, for each song
- Your loop start and end points, per song
These reset each time you reload:
- Speed (always starts at 100%)
- Pitch (always starts at Original)
- Whether loop mode was on or off
- Mute (all parts start unmuted)
Settings are stored in your browser on your device. Using a different browser or device, or clearing your browser data, will reset everything to defaults.
Quick Tips for Practice
Learning your part — Turn up your voice part and turn the others down. Once you know your line, bring the others back up and listen to how you fit in. Then turn down or mute your own part so you know you can sing it mixed.
Stuck on a tricky bit? — Double-tap the marker at the start of the hard section to loop it, then drag the Speed slider down to 70% or so. Let it repeat until it feels comfortable, then gradually bring the speed back up.
Practice on the go — Set up your mix, then press Export Mix. The saved file plays on any device without Wi-Fi or data.
Song sits too high or low? — Try shifting the Pitch down or up by one semitone. You can combine this with a slower speed — both are applied at once.
